Town of Cuyler Cemetery
The Cuyler Cemetery Association was disbanded a few years ago. The Town of Cuyler is responsible only for:
-
Maintaining the cemetery grounds and roadway
-
Opening and closing graves for burials
Families remain responsible for the upkeep of individual gravesites, including:
-
Cleaning and repairing monuments, stones, and markers
-
Caring for flowers, plantings, and personal decorations
Important Note on Fragile Stones
There are many older monuments and stones in the cemetery that are in a fragile state. Out of respect for history and safety:
-
Do not attempt to repair, clean, or reset any stone that does not belong to your own family.
-
Improper handling can cause irreversible damage to historic monuments.
-
If you notice a stone in need of attention that is not your family’s responsibility, please contact the Town Clerk’s Office for guidance.
About New York State Cemetery Law
Under New York State law, regulated cemeteries must maintain trust funds for general upkeep of cemetery grounds. However, family responsibility for monuments and headstones is standard, unless a separate “perpetual care” contract was purchased in the past.
Because the Cemetery Association has been dissolved, the Town is treating the cemetery as municipally maintained. This means the Town provides only the basic care of the grounds and access roads, while families remain responsible for care of their loved ones’ graves.

We thank residents for their cooperation in helping preserve the dignity and respect of the Cuyler Cemetery.
